The USO Celebrates 81 Years of Serving the Nation’s Armed Forces

The USO is an iconic nonprofit organization that has supported American servicemembers since World War II. Today, it celebrates its 81st birthday.

Founded in 1941, the USO is best known for its live performances for deployed troops featuring famous celebrities and comedians. The USO has over 250 R&R locations worldwide where servicemembers can relax, have a snack, connect with loves ones, catch a movie, or just unwind as they transition to their next assignment. To find the nearest USO location to you, drop your location right here.

Finally, the USO’s dedication to servicemembers continues even after they leave active duty, with support programs for individuals transitioning out of the military. USO truly supports the servicemember at every stage of their career.

During the early days of the pandemic, the USO was forced to switch to virtual programming, but that didn’t stop their mission. Their YouTube channel is stacked with visits from musicians, actors, authors, and more celebrities sharing their time with military servicemembers in bases around the world. One that stands out to us was Eric Bana’s visit, where he answered questions about his career and the times he played military characters in films like BLACK HAWK DOWN and LONE SURVIVOR.

Last summer, GovX was proud to support the mission of the USO when they were our GovX Gives Back partner. To coincide with the 80th birthday, the GovX community raised over $12,00 for the organization.

If you’re a military servicemember who’s enjoyed USO programming and services during your career, be sure to wish them a happy birthday in the comments below. And remember, USO services are administered worldwide by a modest staff of only around 300 people, and volunteers outnumber staff members practically 20 to one.
