10 Crazy but True Facts

About Vortex Optics

Get the inside scope.

Vortex Optics has been a GOVX brand icon and permanent fixture at the top of our best-seller lists for over a decade. While millions of outdoor and tactical enthusiasts trust their glass, few know the surprising origin and history behind it.

With that said, we put on our hard hats, went to work, and did a little digging. Enjoy.

10. VORTEX OPTICS FIRST STARTED

AS A RETAIL STORE

When Vortex Optics founders Dan and Margie Hamilton opened their retail store Wild Birds Unlimited in Middleton, Wisconsin back in 1986, their focus was simple: supply local outdoor enthusiasts with top-tier birding gear.

However, selling third-party brands revealed a frustrating reality—there was a glaring lack of durable, high-performance optics available at reasonable prices.

9. THE VORTEX BRAND OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED IN 2002

The closure of their retail store 2001 marked a new beginning for the Hamiltons. Out of a promise to bring dependable, high-value optics to the masses, Vortex Optics was born.

Accompanying the brand out the gate was the groundbreaking Vortex Optics VIP® Warranty, ensuring that if your Vortex riflescope, red dot, rangefinder, apparel, or accessory is ever damaged or defective, they’ll repair or replace it at no cost to you.

8. THE VIP® WARRANTY TEAM HAS PRETTY MUCH SEEN EVERYTHING

Bear attack? Ran over by a tractor? Survived a fire? Blown up by an IED? Yes, those are all real mishaps that have happened, and Vortex has replaced ‘em all.

Unless you’ve intentionally ruined it, lost it, or had it stolen, your gear is covered for life.

7. THEY OPERATE A PRESCHOOL INSIDE THEIR HQ

Established in 2021 at their Barneveld, Wisconsin offices, Vortex operates an on-site preschool and daycare facility appropriately named "Little Buffalos" so employees can bring their kids to work.

This type of dedication has led to the employee-owned company maintaining a high retention rate across departments, making it one of the best places to work in the state.

6. THEY WON A $2.7 BILLION U.S. ARMY CONTRACT

In 2022, Vortex secured a massive 10-year U.S. Army contract to develop the XM157.

This next-gen "smart scope" integrates a laser rangefinder, ballistic calculator, and atmospheric sensors with a digital overlay that automatically adjusts a soldier's aim point in real time.

5. THEY HAVE AN UNDERGROUND MILITARY-GRADE TESTING ARMORY

Subterranean testing is key to Vortex's quality control. Deep below the main facility sits a massive range complex featuring a 100-yard static bay and a 50-yard dynamic tactical arena.

Vortex maintains a specialized armory of firearms, including heavy-caliber Barrett sniper rifles, specifically to evaluate how well their optics withstand extreme, repetitive recoil.

4. THEY ONCE HAD A SECRET SISTER BRAND NAMED EAGLE OPTICS

In the 1990s, the Hamiltons ran a successful side business called Eagle Optics, providing affordable, high-quality binoculars to birdwatchers.

While Vortex was later created for the tactical and hunting markets, the two brands ran parallel for years until Eagle Optics

was absorbed into the main Vortex lineup to streamline operations.

3. THEY ALSO OWN AND OPERATE VORTEX EDGE

Located adjacent to their headquarters, Vortex Edge is a premier indoor shooting and training complex. Featuring cutting-edge simulators, tactical shoot houses, and elite instructors, the facility caters to all skill levels, from first-time shooters and competitive athletes to military and law enforcement personnel.

2. VORTEX RECENTLY ACQUIRED GEOBALLISTICS®

Seeking to revolutionize long-range precision, Vortex acquired the mobile app and ballistics engine GeoBallistics®.

The integration allows Vortex to pair its premium optics with advanced data processing for bullet drop and atmospheric drift, effectively building a smart-tech ecosystem that mirrors their high-tech military innovations for the commercial market.

1. THEY’RE GOLF EXPERTS

Starting launching three golf-specific rangefinders in 2024, Vortex has continued to shake-up the market, especially with golfers who were already familiar with the brand.

Since the products went live, golfers have praised the instantaneous ranging speed and extreme glass clarity, noting that Vortex's multi-coated lenses made it easier to pick out hazards and flags in tricky lighting compared to traditional golf electronics brands.
